Primate Rescue Center
The Coca-Cushi Primate Center, located in the Ecuadorian Amazon about two hours by boat from the town of Coca, has recently been established to care for monkeys rescued from illegal wildlife traffickers. Animals in care at the rescue center are in captivity only because they were taken from the wild, usually at a young age and orphaned in the process. They cannot fend for themselves. Eventually some of them will be returned to the rainforest in "soft release sites", where they will have a chance to reeestablish themselves without threat from human predators.
This is a very new facility with, as yet, space for only a few animals. Our main focus is on endangered primates such as wooly, spider, saki and howler monkeys. However, we also have a kinkajou, and a dozen exotic birds such as toucans and scarlet macaws.
Orphan monkeys, especially those we are attempting to rehabilitate for release back into the wild, require an enormous amount of care. If you are interested in volunteering, click on Volunteer Information for details.
